Dear friends,

It’s been a year since we kicked off a fresh start as Human Movement Project. With your support and enthusiasm, it’s been an incredible first year, filled with dance, community, and service.

In March we hosted LabWorks—a mixed bill of contemporary dance performances by seven Boston choreographers—at our rehearsal home, Human Movement Lab. You might have stopped by our Spring Arts Launch at the Lab, which featured workshops and dance classes for community members. GBH’s All Things Considered featured Human Movement Project and its mission for dance in Boston on its radio show. And in August, lots of you joined us (and gave rave reviews) for our award-winning work Contradictions + Casual Self Loathing at Hyde Park’s Riverside Theatre Works.

In addition to rehearsing and producing our own creative work, Human Movement Project has been busy amplifying the presence of Boston dance in the southwestern neighborhoods. We made space for Artistic Athlete Health Collective, TransDans, The Click, and others to present vital workshops at the Lab. We provided rehearsal space to over 15 artists, and even started a fiscal sponsorship program to share our resources while encouraging and enabling choreographers and companies to bring artistic products and arts experiences to Boston’s southwest neighborhoods.

What’s terrifying, just one year later, is that the current arts economic climate is threatening to slow or halt this progress. Many of the vital grants we depend on have been eliminated. And the terms for those that still exist are not immune to manipulation by our government. We’re lucky that our city and state remain committed to the arts, but as we wrap up the usual fall grant season, there’s a $10,000 to $30,000 deficit in the grand total of grant funding that’s normally available. We remain dedicated to art, movement, and community, no matter what’s happening nationally.

Can you help us find stability as we continue to grow?

The Human Movement Project team is looking to fundraise $10,000 in just about one month—October 31 through December 2 (Giving Tuesday).

Help us nourish the work of Human Movement Project in Boston’s performing arts-neglected neighborhoods. Your donation will enable us to:

  • Run free/low-cost community workshops in creative movement and self-expression for folks in Hyde Park and surrounding neighborhoods.

  • Produce our next large show in the second half of 2026

  • Start creating new work while continuing to pay our professional company members hourly

  • Sustain our service work (fiscal sponsorship, space grants, presenting other artists)

As always, thank you for your care and support. We are so grateful for your partnership as we build space for professional dance in Hyde Park.

Best,

Kim
